NO SOFTWARE IS FREE!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about a middle school teacher who saw one of her students using a Linux distribution, had no clue what she was seeing, and promptly accused the student and the developers of "bootlegging" software.  The note that she wrote to the developers is priceless, especially this line:

At this point, I am not sure what you are doing is legal. No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful. These children look up to adults for guidance and discipline.

Indeed they do.  I wonder what message the students received in this case.  Probably something along the lines of "my teacher is a technological fuckwit halfwit (in the harsh light of the new year, my first choice was perhaps a little mean-spirited, even for me) who has no idea what the hell she is doing vis-a-vis the wide world of computers."   I sure hope she apologized profusely to the student whose software she stole.  Of course, I'm willing to wager that her administration has less knowledge about the computer than she does.

Kudos to the development team for not releasing any particularly identifiying details about the incident to the internet at large.  The mind quivers in thinking about what the Linux community would write in to this poor, technologically inept soul.

Happy New Year, Kiddies.
